The farm gives children a living connection to the rhythms of the year.

In the fall, students may gather apples, press cider, collect walnuts, and help prepare the harvest for drying. Throughout the year, they observe changes in the gardens and woods, visit farm animals, gather natural materials, and experience firsthand how weather and seasons shape the land.

Rather than simply reading about the natural world, children develop a relationship with it. They learn by watching, touching, gathering, building, tasting, questioning, and participating.

These experiences cultivate curiosity, patience, practical knowledge, environmental responsibility, and a strong sense of belonging to the place where they learn.

A Music Program That Grows With the Child

Music education at Two Rivers develops gradually and intentionally as children move through the school.

In preschool, children experience music through singing, rhythm, movement, listening, and musical play. In kindergarten, these experiences become more structured as students build a stronger foundation in rhythm, pitch, ensemble participation, and musical expression.

Beginning in first grade, students participate in formal group ukulele lessons and supported practice during the school day. As their skills and responsibility grow, students begin bringing their instruments home and eventually progress from ukulele to smaller guitars and then full-sized guitars.

We chose fretted string instruments because they make it possible for children to begin creating music together at a young age while establishing skills that can grow with them for many years.

Through music, students develop listening, coordination, memory, persistence, confidence, and cooperation. Most importantly, they experience the joy and connection of making music with others.

Children at TRFS spend meaningful time outside every day, rain or shine.

Our students play in the schoolyard, walk through the woods, visit the gardens and farm animals, build, dig, climb, gather, imagine, and explore. Outdoor time gives children the movement and sensory experiences their developing bodies need while supporting creativity, cooperation, confidence, and emotional regulation.

Children are given the time to become truly immersed in their play. A fallen branch can become a bridge, a fort, a tool, or the beginning of an elaborate shared story. Through this kind of open-ended outdoor experience, children learn to solve problems, negotiate with one another, take appropriate risks, and turn their ideas into something tangible.

At TRFS, outdoor play is not a break from learning. It is one of the places where some of the most meaningful learning happens.
